Movies: To walk a mile in someone else’s shoes
“The more opinions you have, the less you see.” (p. 170) Our presuppositions and views can blind us if we hold too tightly. I am a very visual person so movies are a way God shows me things. Sometimes it is a scene or a character or just a theme throughout the movie. The visual story, taking me out of my own story, to “walk a mile in someone’s shoes” has a powerful influence. I like it when movies challenge my viewpoints. I remember thinking, sure, the death penalty was okay but then I watched Dead Man Walking -- I needed to see a different perspective.
I need the “him,” “her” or “them” to have a name, even if it is just fiction. Don’t things seem different when it is about “George” rather than “him” or “it?” Now there is a real-ness to the story and a face to the name.
