Acceptable Voyeurism (Journal 2)

Our obsession with fame and celebrity bothers me, yet I can’t break myself away from it. It has become an acceptable form of voyeurism.

To some degree I think we all want an element of fame. We all want to be associated with someone bigger then ourselves. In college I remember telling people that I was three degrees from Kevin Bacon (my best friend growing up, his uncle produced a movie with Kevin Bacon in it) in hopes that this validated me or impressed someone.

Growing up I always wanted to be noticed. In my mind, my solution for this was to become famous. People notice famous people; people love famous people. In my mind fame gave people a voice, and all I really wanted as a kid was to be heard.

Maybe, the reason we want to be like celebrities so much is that they are noticed, heard and loved. Even if they screw up, we still remain interested. I think people want to know that someone is interested, that someone cares. It was the interest of a Young Life leader that introduced me to Christ. That fact that he cared and was interested saved my life. People, like you and I, need to know God cares, that He is interested.

To end this I must confess, I really don’t know what all this means.
